President George Washington moves into Franklin House, New York.

On April 23, 1789, U.S. President George Washington moves into Franklin House, in New York City. It was the first executive mansion.



Motion pictures premiere in New York City.

On April 23, 1896, Thomas Edison presented the first publically-projected Vitascope motion picture (with hand-tinting) in the US to a paying American audience on a screen, at Koster and Bial’s Music Hall in New York City (at 34th Street and Broadway), with his latest invention – the projecting kinetoscope or Vitascope.



The U.S. Senate passes the Soldiers’, Bonus Bill.

The Bonus Act awarded World War I veterans additional pay in various forms, with only limited payments available immediately. Veterans were given $1 for each day of service in the United States, and $1.25 for each day of service overseas.
