NATIONAL BIOGRAPHERS’ DAY
What is a biography? A biography is a written account of another person’s life. Biographers don’t get enough credit for the work they do; that’s why we have Biographer’s Day. National Biographer’s Day commemorates the anniversary of the first meeting of Samuel Johnson and his biographer James Boswell in London, England on May 16, 1763, and honors all biographers. One of the first biographies was written in the Roman Empire. The first found record of this kind of journal was written by Cornelius Nepos in 44 BC, who wrote an extensive biography on the most famous generals of the Roman and Greeks. That’s where the story of Samuel Johnson came into play. When he and James Boswell published The Life of Samuel Johnson in 1791, Boswell’s research and narrative style on Johnson’s life helped set the standard for biographers, as during that time it was considered to be one of the best biographies in the English language.
On this day, read about biographies and biographers. You can also pick a biography to read on this day. If you find biographies interesting, find a portrait of a person you admire and take the day to read about them.
NATIONAL MIMOSA DAY
Calling all the brunch enthusiasts and cocktail fanatics to celebrate 16 May as the National Mimosa Day. This classic mixed drink has become a brunch staple and a popular drink at weddings. Mimosa, made with orange juice and sparkling wine, also adds a punch of flavor to the day after a celebration. The best part about it is that it fits in your pocket, not the glass, but the drink. All you have to do to prepare it is to fill the glass half full with your favorite sparkling wine and top it off with chilled orange juice. Garnish with a small orange slice and you are good to go. If you prefer a non-alcoholic mimosa, you can easily substitute ginger ale or sparkling apple cider juice for champagne.
The Queen of Holidays, Jace Shoemaker Galloway created this day. Beverage days are meant to have fun and explore your culinary skills. Today, learn to make mimosas for baby showers, wedding showers, or other special occasions. Mix a couple of mimosas to go with your late breakfast or brunch. It is believed that this drink dates back to the 1920s and most likely got its name from a yellow flower native to Australia.
