How did we decide upon dedicating an entire day to the Earth?
On April 22, 1970, the Environmental Teach-In held a nationwide day of environmental education and activism that it called Earth Day. The event was organized by environmental activists and Sen. Gaylord Nelson, D-Wis. Nelson wanted to show other U.S. personnel that there was widespread public support for a political agenda centered on environmental issues
Following the Earth Day celebration inspired by Nelson, which demonstrated enormous support for the environmental legislation, Congress passed many important environmental laws, including the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, as well as laws to protect wilderness areas. The Environmental Protection Agency was created within three years after Earth Day 1970.
In 1995, Nelson received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Bill Clinton for his role in founding Earth Day, raising awareness of environmental issues, and promoting environmental action.
Why is this year so special?
This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day. The connection that we have to nature, plants, and the land is integral to our health and all that we are.
Moreover, this comes at a time where we are amidst such a situation where all we can do is sit home and understand the severity of these situations and do our part.
It is also a great opportunity for us to reflect upon our relationship with the planet and care for the most important entity right now which is our health as well as the Earth’s.
What is the 50th-anniversary’s theme?
As we have established the significance this day holds no other theme would be apt enough other than climate change. Furthermore, because of the grappling situation currently and various conferences being postponed and all for the right reasons. The zeal of this super day should not diminish.
Knowing we are at a state of irreversible damage being done to the earth, we should not stand down or slow the momentum of this cause.
Activities to partake in,
-Donate! as much as possible to any foundation which driven on enforcing environmental policies and also spreads awareness.
-Recycle and repurpose to encourage sustainable living.
-Put a stop to plastic dependency, it is not worth the torture that the environment has to face.
-Be self-sufficient, start an inhouse garden to cater your needs
-Most importantly, spread awareness, the more people who know the closer we get in achieving our goal to a much cleaner and greener future.
The positive side to the current situation,
This day should also be the right time to look upon the silver lining of the current situation, after the earth receiving a well-deserved breath of fresh air, this pace should not deteriorate after we emerge from the situation.
We must have a new perspective towards the earth and work towards preserving it. We have noticed multiple scenarios proving to us the harm we were causing to the earth and how the earth is replenishing and growing all away from us humans.
The air is cleaner, the habitats are re-growing, the marine life is showing evident progress in restoring its health.
But the question arises, are we capable enough to hold a good grip on the balance after the virus is a distant memory. Will we be able to satisfy our needs as well as reducing our footprint?
Today should be the right time we come together and take the stern decision to stop exploiting and degrading our environment.
This day also should act as a revelation that this pandemic has given us this time to realize our mistakes and rectify them when we do have the time.
Its time we come together and get acquainted with nature when we need it the most.
